Diaspora Donations to PMH
by: Thomson Fontaine
Replying to an urgent request from the Dominica Authorities, which was publicized in theDominican.net (See Appeal), several Dominican Associations and Diaspora groups have rallied to the support of the Princess Margaret Hospital.
The most recent efforts involved the supply of over $40,000 of equipment and supplies delivered by CaribbeanSupplies.com through the Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences and CaribbeanSupplies.com.
The supplies shipped ranges from prescription drugs like Amoxycillin (antibiotic), Acetaminophen 500mg, sterile syringes, rehydration salts, and sutures to basic supplies like dressing pads, toothbrushes, bandages and diaper rash ointment.
The entire effort to get the supplies to Dominica have been made possible through the support of many members of DAAS, as well as the generosity of USAIR employee Ron Shillingford, Fedex, and Amerijet.
Earlier in the year, the Dominica Houston Association shipped over $40 000 worth of supplies to Dominica. Other groups including the Sisserou Cultural Club of Ontario, the Commonwealth of Dominica Ontario Association and the Dominica United Kingdom Association have all joined in the effort.
The Dominican continues to encourage the Diaspora to get involved in continuing in the noble effort of assisting this crucial area in Dominica. Donations and assistance can be coordinated through Friends of PMH, a non-profit group headed by former Police Commissioner Desmond Blanchard, and comprising other resident Dominicans including the Hospital Administrator and Diaspora Dominicans.
