Dominican Patriots: We need a better Dominica now

By Gabriel Christian

Gabriel Christian
Gabrriel Christian Esq is a distinguished US attorney and national of Dominica.

To Matt Peltier: Thanks for allowing Dr. Sam Christian on your program on March 31, 2009. Thanks for standing up for freedom and democracy in our occupied country; one which is ruled by puppets of the money changers, fly by nights, those who come bearing gifts but who harbor designs on our land, water and other natural resources; those who give comfort to crooks.

Thanks for standing up for law and order in our increasingly lawless country, where the Government is so saddled with scandal it cannot even ensure the law courts do right by bringing justice to brazen murderers.

Where Integrity in Public Office legislation is written to cover up misdeeds in office - not uncover them. Where, but for Lennox Linton and intrepid reporters like yourself, our people would be blinded to the misconduct of our leaders, or the law suit in Tortola. Thanks for strengthening the tradition of a free press in Dominica, and may it be ever so.

We are Natural Resource Nationalists:

We have heard it said we are sour because we insist that our geothermal resources should be owned by and for Dominicans - not foreign concerns who disregard our national interest. We have never asked for contract for ourselves.

At all times we requested a national option; one where the Government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica were primary in control of said resources and where our nation and people would reap the primary benefit.

We are natural resource nationalists and proud of it. We, of A Better Dominica, believe that the resources of Dominica should be owned by the people of Dominica for the benefit of the people of Dominica.

When we look at the actions of this Government re aggregate, geothermal and business ownership control it is clear that they do not believe as we do, and are patriotic only with words.

Their conduct benefit themselves and the few who can pay them. In eight years where is the new Dominican business ownership class or captains of industry? All we see is a blatant pattern of hand-outs to make our people beggars and minions; fit only to do the bidding of those who seek to perpetuate themselves in political power. We cannot build a country based on the ideology of beggarism.

We believe in Dominica first, and natural resource nationalism. We welcome guests, and assistance, but all must be premised on mutual respect and mutual interest: we do not believe in secret or one sided deals. We believe in good and transparent governance and our people controlling the commanding heights of our economy. Our every effort to put business ownership into the hands of local people have been met with lies, treachery and obstacles.

You speak of independence and spent millions on independence celebration, while – by stealth – the country is falling into foreign hands. Who are you fooling, Sir? To this bankrupt regime we say: By your actions you shall be known.

As with Washway, Dr. Shillingford, Severin McKenzie, Dr. Sam and others at home and abroad, we shall place our record of civic duty alongside all others to show we have meant well for our people not our selfish interest.

We are prepared to put our record of service to our country alongside anyone else; and challenge them to find that "sour grapes" is part of our legacy. The list of achievements and contribution by the Dominica Diaspora in Europe, N. America and within the region is long and covers many decades. As example see list of achievements small and large of the Dominica Academy of Arts & Sciences atda-academy.org

When they attack me, personally as one government agent did on March 31, 2009, I respond not with idle words but a legacy of deeds which favored the freedom and prosperity of our people:

1. in 1975-1976 - Organized work crew for the Didier Lane Community Center. Today, it is still standing.

2. Deputy Headboy at DGS who organized classrooms for Rosie Douglas to found the Dominica Cuba Friendship Society in 1976. Our legacy is still standing.

3. President of the Dominica Federation of Students and Headboy at Sixth Form College who led the students to Grandbay to vote in Pierre Charles as NYC President in 1977. That legacy is still standing.

4. In 1978, alongside Pierre Charles, led the student portion of the delegates to the 11th World Festival of Youth and Students to Havana and so opened the way for relations which allowed for hundreds of Dominicans to study in Cuba up to this day. We were detained and searched by Patrick John's Government on our return, even though we had sent his wife Desiree to Cuba for medical assistance. That legacy is still standing

5. In 1982 founded Frontline Cooperative Bookstore with Eddie "Izzar" Toulon and others and became the Cooperative's first President. Having difficulties, but Frontline Bookstore is still standing.

6. From 1982-1999 - Served in various positions with the Dominica Association of Washington DC, to include being its President, during the years of the Freedom Party's and UWP rule--yet worked unceasingly with other Dominicans of different political views to include Prime Minister Eugenia Charles to send thousands of dollars in food aid, books, medical supplies and promote tourism for Dominica - to include a $50,000 grant for AIDS from the Bill Gates Foundation education during the UWP in collaboration with Minister Doreen Paul.

7. In 1992 co- founded Pont Casse Press with Judge Irving Andre and authored and co-authored five books on Dominica's history and literature - and facilitated the publication of 1/2 dozen more books by other Dominican authors.

8. Co-founded the Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences with brother Raglan Riviere now under the leadership of Dr. Clayton Shillingford and other brilliant patriots who love Dominica and render much financial and material assistance to our homeland.

9. I mention our efforts to revive of the Dominica Cadet Corps . It continues to grow and serve our youth

10. Co-founded the Dominica Sustainable Energy Corporation with Bevin Etienne, Dexter Newton, Dr. Fontaine, Gilbert Prevost, Jerome Austrie, Ginel Prevost, Mahala Shillingford, Washway Douglas, and others and brought down the first modern wind turbine during 2002 for Operation Energy Emancipation.

We also did the first modern wind study for a wind farm and the government did not work with us to make that a reality.

I have to mention these facts because some seek to dismiss our own sons and daughters of the soil in favor of crooked foreign representatives and mislead those who do not know the truth.

Dominicans: We Are Not Alone: The Diaspora is Rising

The Diaspora is rising to the defense of the homeland. We shall do our duty for A Better Dominica. Let none say, we deserted the country at this hour of need. All Dominicans, we ask you to rally to A Better Dominica. Spread the word, sound the call! We shall not be moved. We shall not turn back in this cause!

We are not alone. Many in the Diaspora have similar records of achievement and have assisted our country. We have not betrayed our country by going away to study. We have labored tirelessly to promote the homeland’s best interest.

We mean well, have presented by example a better international image for our country in culture, the professions and will uphold the dignity of the homeland and raise high its banner in victory.

The Dominica we desire is not one where we are dogs, serfs, slaves, peons or spectators in our own land; dispossessed such as the Tibetans and others have been. We are a small people but we have pride in what is ours and we shall fight to preserve it!

Where is the China MOU Mr. Prime Minister? Make it public! What is the CMC Plan for Portsmouth Mr. Prime Minister? Make it public! Where is the geothermal contract Mr. Prime Minister? Make it public! Where is the Diaspora Policy Document, Mr. Prime Minister?

You have refused to even acknowledge it! Utter disrespect to your own brothers and sisters, yet you have time to respond to e-mails from those who have you and our country enmeshed in scandal and law suits. Why Sir? This behavior was not necessary. You know we tried our best to work with you, and your Cabinet, at all times until you abandoned good sense and patriotic commitment.

Let us never betray good sense or the homeland. These times demand proud, boys, girls, men and women who will hold all our leaders in and out of power accountable - especially those we elect. They are our servants not our masters. And this rude, arrogant, dishonest, dismissive and secretive manner of rule must come to an end.

We Worked with All Governments where the National Interest is Concerned

So now we are attacked and maligned for standing for truth and supporting the national interest of our denied people. Despite the position of Ms. Charles on Cuba and those who were left wing, we worked with her government on matters of national development.

Despite the fact we were not supporters of the UWP, we worked with Prime Minister James and Ron Green on matters of national development. We never turned our back on Dominica. Today, because we seek truth and A Better Dominica, some agents of the regime attack us.

However, our record of working with Dominicans of all political stripes and colors to promote local control of our natural resources, respect for our national culture, dignity and identity is beyond reproach. We are conscious that we desire nothing more than a just and better destiny for our country; our consciences are clear. Can our present leaders say the same?

Together with our grassroots people, all our lives have been one of the pursuit for A BETTER DOMINICA which began when we were teenagers. We are not self serving political grasshoppers, clowns, traitors to our country's best hopes or political acrobats.

Dominicans deserve better than that; for while we may be poor in means it is only so because we have failed to do better. As an intelligent and God fearing people, patriotic and wise, we can and must do better because we deserve better - those of us who are born of the brave Kalinago and African warriors - commingled with the blood of brave social democrats of European hue such as Phyllis Shand Alfrey.

Inspired by the leadership of Jaco, Balla, Congoree, Rawle, Loblack, LeBlanc, Rosie, Pierro - and yes Ms. Charles too - because she had dignity too! Yes, we shall rise and take our rightful place as defenders and builders of our homeland.

We mean what we say and we do what we mean. We have never believed in lying to the masses or bribing them with trinkets such as some of our ancestors did who sold us into slavery. All our lives we have struggled for a free, just and prosperous country and we shall do so till our dying breathe.

Dominican Patriots, arise!

Comments:
Gabe you raise some pertinentand critical issues re the direction of our country. One cannot help but worry about the disturbing direction that Dominica is steered to. I hope that commonsense will prevail and the leaders will realize the error of their ways.

again Gabo is raising some important issues, and the question always remain, are we heading in the correct direction? are there changes that are required? I must conclude whether one is Labour Freedom or UWP we need to see Dominica as a train and inspite of our political or religious afiliations we are in one of those cabins, if the country moves the train moves and everyone moves with it. There is a need for clear cut policies in Tourism, Energy, Agrisculture, youth development and others. There is need for a way forward in this despensation. I believe that the Diaspora has played a very important role in the past and continues to play but what there is is need for our politicians to be willing to listen and listen honestly. Politicans must be commited to National Development and not just what is convenient then and allow actions to be taken upon proper evaluation of the circumstances and not just based on party political affiliation and self. No government is going to be in power for ever however if the country moves whether a party is in or out of government there will be a space and an opportunity for survival for all. as I write it appears that its SOME EATING ALL. Let us fight to save our country COME HE FOWARD SONS AND DAUGHTERS DO THE RIGHT BE FIRM BE FAIR TOILING WITH HEARTS HANDS AND VOICES WE MUST PROSPER SOUND THE CALL. The solutions to solving our problems cannot be found in China Venezuela Cuba the Unites States or else where it must be found within our system and in that case its Dominica lets make the adjustments that are required lets make the changes that require a better Dominica is possible.

Very good article in response to some of the stupid things being said in Dominica by some who claim to be representing the masses.Keep the good work

Now is the time for all Patriotic, Right thinking Dominicans to come to the aid of our Country.Dominicans everywhere should shed their partisan colors and focus on, WHAT IS BEST FOR OUR COUNTRY. These are SERIOUS TIMES, our legacy is being sold and soon, if we do take the necessary action ,we will not be able to look our children in the eye when they ask us "what did we do to preserve their legacy?"
Here's hoping that our current leaders will allow THEIR BETTER JUDGEMENT TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR SENSES

I appreciate Mr. Christian's concerns but i wonder how vocal he would have been if his company had gotten the geothermal contract. Obviously Mr. Christian is very bitter over his loss of that contact. I would like to wish him good luck teaming up with the UWP. I hope he gets that contract he so desire if the UWP wins the next general election.

These people in the diaspora think tat they know everything. Once they can't have their way, they get upset.

Gabriel is Dominica's Golden son. A man who has spent most of his time and wealth trying improve Dominican lives. He could be cozzing up with the high class in Washington D.C but, instead, he spends time and money trying to fix Dominica. I know this man is from Delice but I always wonder why is he spending all his money to fix Princess Magaret hospital, or Sponsoring Dominican own start-up companies?

Mr. Christ got a rude awaken that he is not the lord of Dominica. It's hard thing for him to accept. The P.M. saw him for the wolf that he is dressed up as a lamp. Mr. Christ is becoming unravelled. He should seek professional help because it appears that he has a mental disorder.

You thought the Prime Minister was beneath you and you could twist him around your little or should I say big fingers; it did not work. Mr. Christ love for the media is unbelievable, he would do anything to be in front of a mike and seem to be loosing mike time.

If you are Mr. Christ friend, please ask him to get some help for his controlling and manipulative, media hungry behaviour. Very sad that he had to stoop so low because he did not get his way and the geo deal.

Why are we as a people so steeped in political colours that we can't look at the issues that are affecting our beloved nation? Aren't we intelligent enough to look beyond our partisan politics and call a spade a spade.

Let's for a moment say this is really "sour grapes" speaking. Does it detract from the issues being raised by Mr. Christian? Aren't the issues relevant? Shouldn't there be answers to these questions being asked and issues coming to the fore?

It is indeed sad to see us break down our own people all because of a colour instead of taking an objective view of the issues confronting the country.

We are all free to support our colours but Dominicans, seriously can we say that our actions and inactions both in and out of government that we are leaving behind a good legacy for our children to follow?

What has happened to ethics both in the public and private sector. Are we saying that once we support a party whatever they do is correct?

Come our people, we are more intelligent than this. Let us stop attacking every messenger but listen intelligently, look at the information being presented and make informed contributions.

Come on Mr. Christian, who are you fooling? Dominicans are smarter than that. You may have raised a few points but would have been much more convincing if you had form your own political party. How do you expect us to take you seriously when you are seeking to replace one so called corrupt government with even more corruption? This is nothing more than Mr. Christian’s big ego and wanting to “teach” Mr. Skerrit a lesson. Mr. Christian needs to come clean and be honest with himself and Dominicans. One last thing, please do not use the good Lord’s name in your quest for revenge.

I'm a US citizen- a regular white dude. Yet I've always been somehow captivated by Dominica. It's not as well known as Jamaica or Cayman, as those are tourist/beach-goer spots. For me that's a good thing- you guys have your own identity, so to speak. Your island has something else to offer besides sandy white beaches and high end resorts. You're the real deal. I can see how you good citizens would be concerned about the motives of other countries or organizations who bring 'gifts' yet do not put Dominica first. I'm no expert, but I see countries like India getting our computer and IT related jobs- like software writing, ect. Good for them. However, I'd rather see those jobs going to places like Dominica. I'm sure there are other fields of expertise that don't rely on manufacturing, agriculture, or tourism, but rather knowledge and skill. Obviously, this takes time and $$$. And I don't have the financial means (yet) to buy up a bunch of computers to donate to your schools, but I'm sure somebody out there does. As for the new tax haven laws- they stink. But maybe if you can't be the Switzerland of the Caribbean, you can be the Silicon Valley instead- or both!

Gabe you're a patriot and a hero! Dominicans care too much about their country to allow a Prime Minister, more concerned about money and getting rich, rather than taking care of their affairs to run their country.

History will prove you correct. A lot of stuff is going on that if half the story was told there would be loud and growing voices calling for the PM to step down.

May God keep Dominica safe...

Gabu, let me tell you straight up. You al thought that all you would be able to tell the PM stand up and he would jump. But you know what, he will not take shit from you guys. So you , your brother, nenen, pawen, sister and all of them can jump...we Dominicans not buying your pashi-coco.

Stay in Washington and run your law firm .

ANONYMOUS you have hijacked this thread and turned a constructive conversation into a personal vendetta. However, basic etiquette dictates that in matters of such personal attacks one should identify themselves and stand behind their attacks. in other words:MAN-UP. for it is only then your points hold validity and a constructive conversation can ensue; until then you should take your malicious attitude somewhere else and allow folks to have an objective and much needed constructive conversation on DOMINICA
side note: i hope you're not SKERRIT IN DISGUISE

I'm white dude above- hope UR not jumpin' on my post. I was just generalizing as a distant observer. Not trying to hijack. If U refer to the Gabu comments- it ain't me bro. Peace.

ain't you white boy! i'm referring to that dominican above who doesn't have the decency to spew his personal venom to gABU's face and instead chooses to hide behind some anonymous facade.

Zead, you are an idiot. Gabu is tainted meat and will continue to speak about revolution. He and his brother Samm will do their own revolution...not in DA though.

I was introduced to Matt Peltier show when I visited Dominica recently. I have listed to the programme every morning on the internet
I was very impressed with Mr Gabriel's discussion. He makes me even
more proud of being a Dominican. It confirms the many educated Dominicans who are overseas who love Dominica and would like to return to Dominica to render their services, but unfortunately the door is not open for us to do that.Politics has been the downfall
of Dominica and continues to be that is why many of the other islands are leaving us behind in many aspects of development
I pray for a better Dominica eeryday and hope the politicias will come to their senses and find within their heart to stop the corruption and think and do better for all Dominicans

Gabe - in your first paragraph you refer to Dominica as an "occupied country". Who is occupying Dominica?

nice question anonymous now only one thing missing.....identify yourself so we can start talking to each other instead of at each other........TRAIN the same goes for you..thanks for the IDIOT complement..........no offense but the same goes for you..identify yourself .and lets have a real man to man conversation....that's what Dominica has been missing...real conversation......it doesn't mean we have to agree with each other...but maybe along the way we can learn from each other. Gabu has his faults like we all do ........however his patriotism and love for his country is real...so lets put all the bullshit aside and lets discuss dominica and what's going on

Zead, I agree with you. We take potshots at each other because we disagree on a view point. It doesn't have to be like that. we need to respect each other even if we don't agree with the views expressed. In other words "let's agree to disagree."

So, let's do away with the insults, please.

Zaed, isn't that the name of the cheap old dirty rum they made many moons ago in DA...Moon-shine.

Zaed, you are on every page running your mouth like a drunken sailor...chill out garcon, chill out. Gabu is nobody. His patriotism is to make money. you think Gabu care about you and me (oh maybe you in the revolution with him too). Nobody is more patriot than me or you or the government. We live there, so we are the patriot...not those in DC..ok.

Wey to go Gabu, continue to speak the truth and the truth shall set us free. The Skeritt regieme is indeed very corrupt and bankrupt, it is time for them to go. But who will replace them?

Gabe work toward promoting and developing country.
And stop playing politics. You did not get the
geothermal contract, That is why you are so bitter.

Sad that a Government highly praised by the IMF, EU,other International Organisations and Governments is on the Corruption Guage of Mr Christian and his team of Domincan Professionals. Sad that suddenly Mr. Christian has a list of issues against the Roosevelt Skeritt led Administration.

I live in Dominica and I must acknowledge the contribution of My Christian as listed in his article above, Thank you sir. This was when you were a patriotic Domimican and that does not allow you to have special treatment and it does not place you on a higher plain than other Dominicans who also love their country.

It is sda that you allow you ego to take control of the good in you and to use others for your personal revenge on Hon. Roosevelt Skeirritt.

Mr Christian you presented proposals where it was determined that Dominca's Best Interest would not be served if these proposals were taken on board in their present form. You have attacked and accsued the PM on Radio and Print Media of selling our cou try to foreingners. You have accued the PM of having foreign Diplomats who are crooks representing our nation Internationally among other allegations.

Sir when you presented your many proposals and held discussions with the PM were you not aware of the corruption and other allegations that you now speak of?

I can say that you were looking for your piece of the pie.

Now, sir, isn't a fact that your proposal in relatiojn to the GEOTHERMAL issue if accepted in its present form would create a conflict and would indeed make the Government Corrupt?

Sir, why haven't you made mention of the proposal to pay your brother the following salasry US$7,500.00 in Dominca, in addition to Dwelling House in Goodwill, with Swimming Pool, Vehicle and Free Gasoline among other things?

Sir, why dont you explain to the Domincans overseas why you would go to the very same nations to set up Business Contacts with the very persons you now call crooks?

Sir, seem to have a problemm with foreigners owning any business in Dominica or investing in Exploration and Exploiting of our Natural Resources, but in your porposal your team stated that you do not have the Financies to develop the GEOTHERMAL venture but you will seek investments from overseas. Sir, would that be the same as what is being done now, and in only ONE location in Dominca?

Sir, isn't it a fact that some of your supporters brought a team to meet Government to discuss GeoThermal Energy Exploration and Development with a Budget of USD$50,000.00 and met with Ministers at Fort Toung Hotel?

Sir, isnt it a fact that you were born in Dominica and now rside in Washington and you are indeed a foreigner in the land of the USA, well established and suceesful Attorney at Law. Why then do you spread that negative attitude agaisnt Foreign investment in Dominica.

Sir, would it be correct to say that you, a known what I say goes person, failed in all your attempted to maniPulate the PM and you are of the view that the PM is not of your status thus he should simply jump when you say so and the fact that he has not reaslly hurt your inflamed ego?

I must admit that you have raised some pertinent issues about oru Development, but you have tainted these issues with degoratory words and insults towards our Government and representatives and that is unacceptable Mr Christian. We voted for them and you have to respect the office that they hold.

You never had a problem before seatinig in the PM Office seeking to have your way and once that failed you began your tongue lashing and I can safely say that if you had secured what you were after PM Skerritt would be a hero in you books.

Fianally I would like to ask this, if this event in Bronx was not Anti Government it would include invitations to both the PM and Opposition Leader in the form of a Debate, but again you are being you and I hope that Dominicans will see through your outdated us and them, 1970's political rhetoric. Its time for you to Upgrade Mr Christain sir, that sopeach could have worked in 1970 not now.

Good Luck
