Lara Named as West Indies Cricket Captain by Thomson Fontaine
Thirty-three year-old Brian Lara, who previously led the West Indies in 1998 and 1999, was named by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to replace Carl Hooper as West Indies captain for the Cable & Wireless home series against Australia and Sri Lanka.
At the same time, 22-year-old Ramnaresh Sarwan was named vice captain and Bennett King
of Australia was named as the first ever foreign coach of the West Indies cricket team. Gus Logie of Trinidad will serve as King's coaching assistant, while Ricky Skerritt was retained as team manager and Roger Brathwaite was appointed as the board's Chief Executive Officer.
In the recent World Cup where the Hooper-led West Indies disappointingly exited at the first round stage, Lara was the most prolific scorer - with 248 runs - in the West Indies' failed attempt at the 2003 World Cup. Lara holds the worlds test record (375) and first-class (501) batting record.
Lara previously held the West Indies cricket team captaincy but resigned in disgust after two years in the job at the start of the 2000 season following humiliating losses on tour of New Zealand where they were beaten 2-0 in the test series and 5-0 in the one-dayers.
This time however he embraced the opportunity to once again lead the West Indies to its glory days in international cricket. He will be complemented by a talented cast of batsmen led by Sarwan and will shortly have to prove himself against current world cricket powerhouse Australia in the West Indies. According to Lara, "at present it's a great challenge. I see my responsibilities and I want to play a part."
