Runs for Aussies in Second Test Thomson Fontaine
Following up on their nine-wicket victory over the West Indies in Guyana last weekend, Australia's top order plundered a threadbare West Indies bowling attack in closing the first day of the Second Cable and Wireless Test in Port of Spain at 391 for three on today. The world cup cricket champions pummeled the hapless West Indians on a flat oval pitch in an amazing display of top class batting.
There were centuries from Ricky Ponting and Darren Lehmann who led the run-glut with the vice-captain stroking his second hundred in as many Tests and Lehmann compiling a maiden hundred. The pair established a new third-wicket record for the Aussies in Tests against the West Indies - 315 - before Lehmann fell just before the close for 160, caught by debutant wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh off Vasbert Drakes.
Trailing in the four-match series after the nine-wicket loss in the First Test in Guyana, the West Indies selectors chose to play only three specialist bowlers - Mervyn Dillon, Pedro Collins and Drakes - along with another newcomer, all-rounder Carlton Baugh, who replaced the injured wicket keeper Ridley Jacobs.
Despite the tradition of the Queen's Park Oval pitch in offering assistance to the slow bowlers in the latter stages of Test matches, uncapped Anguillan off-spinning all-rounder Omari Banks was omitted while the credentials of fast bowler Tino Best, another untried player, were also ignored.
The full squads are: West Indies: Brian Lara (capt), Wavell Hinds, Devon Smith, Darren Ganga, Ramnawesh Sarwan, Marlon Samuels, Dave Bernard jr, Carlton Baugh jr, Vasbert Drakes, Mervyn Dillon, and Pedro Collins.
Australia: Steve Waugh (capt), Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Darren Lehmann, Adam Gilchrist, Brad Hogg, Andy Bichel, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie, and Stuart MacGill.
