Miss DominicaMiss Dominica 2003 and Calypso Monarch Crowned

Minerve Lewis of Good Hope has been crowned Miss Dominica 2003, and Davidson Victor (De Observer), has retained the 2003 calypso monarch title. The two were crowned in the capital Roseau in separate events leading up to the popular carnival Monday and Tuesday street jump-up.

In the Miss Dominica pageant, Lewis outperformed six other ladies to win the coveted title. She was awarded for best costume, best in swimwear, and best in costume. The first runner-up was Lynthea Augustine of Vieille Case who received the prize for best evening dress.

The second runner-up was Dana Shillingford of Kings Hill who took the miss amity award. Michelle Paul of Goodwill went home with the best talent, miss photogenic and miss intelligent prizes.

The other participants were Kishma Carbon of Mahaut, Candy Hazel of Marigot and Kimara Hurtault of Tarish Pit (Stock Farm). Among her many prices, Lewis will take home a new car, and is expected to represent Dominica at the Regional and International level.

Calypso MonarchDe Observer who was defending his crown sang ''Search for excellence'' and ''Never give up'' in a commanding display to win his second straight calypso monarch award in Dominica's calypso competitions.

Derrick ''De Hunter'' St. Rose, a former monarch, was first runner-up with ''Guilty'' and ''I still believe'' while first-time finalist Dennis ''Dice'' Joseph placed second runner-up with ''Young people's opinion'' and ''The return of Tarzan�.

Former king Chester ''Daddy Chess'' Letang came third with his rendition ''Talk alone is not enough'' and ''Wild Wild West.'' Eight other calypsonians took part in the finals including De Bobb, Dice, Lord Karessah, Jama B, Diva Niocah, Scrunter, Starrow, and Young Bull.
