Deux Branches, Dominica (TDN)
International reggae superstar Nasio Fontaine has condemned the Chinese quarrying operations in Deux Branches. In a live appearance at the quarrying site earlier today the reggae artist denounced the wanton destruction of Dominica’s natural environment.
“They are destroying the rivers they are planning to finish off the mountains… its pure destruction…I’m calling on the government, everyone of all you must understand that this needs to stop…stand up for your country.
“This is the place where we have our best rivers, if we have to destroy our country to build an international airport then it is not worth it,” Nasio added.
Nasio also called on Dominicans to join him at the site vowing to stay on as long as it takes to get the project ended. He is only the latest in a number of Dominicans and organisations that have called for the halting of quarrying operations.
The place where the operations are being conducted is known to have deposits of copper and some have accused the Chinese company involved in the quarrying of launching an illegal mining campaign.
This quarrying operation has resulted in disastrous negative impacts to the Pagua River, defacing of an entire mountain, disruption of the lives of residents of Concord and loss of their recreational, tourism, and food sources.
Nasio has gained international acclaim as one of the leading reggae voices since Bob Marley and he’s known for his heartfelt roots reggae music, conscious lyrics, and messages about social justice, freedom, spirituality, and empowerment.
