Port of Spain, Trinidad (TDN)
The opposition United National Congress scored a sweeping victory at the General Elections that took place in Trinidad and Tobago on 28th April 2025. UNC leader Kamla Persad Bissessar who previously served one term as Prime Minister from 2010 to 2015 is now back at the helm.
Hours after the polls closed in the twin island republic, former leader of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley conceded defeat telling reporters that “it is not a good night for the PNM. From all reports we have lost”.
Bissessar’s UNC secured 26 of the 41 seats at stake with 15 going to Stewart Young’s PNM. She campaigned on a promise of higher public sector wages, protection for pensions, and a plan to restart Petrotrin, the state oil company shut down in 2018 due to corruption.
In recent years the country has struggled to control increasingly violent crime and rising corruption. On March 16, 2025 Rowley stepped aside as Prime Minister and was replaced by Stuart Young who announced an election date shortly after assuming the position.
Following last night’s defeat, Young promised to keep the feet of the PNM to the coals vowing that “despite tonight I will fight for Trinidad and Tobago”.
