Basseterre, St Kitts (TDN) -- The Cabinet of prime minister Dr Denzil Douglas of St Kitts and Nevis is in further turmoil as deputy prime minister Hon. Sam T. Condor has resigned from the Cabinet with immediate effect.

His resignation comes just days after Dr. Douglas fired Attorney General Dr Timothy Harris over what he described as his refusal to support the Senators (Increasing of Number) Bill, 2012 and the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank (Vesting of Certain Lands) Bill 2012.

Additionally, the PM explained that Dr. Harris did not indicate whether or not he would vote against the Opposition’s Motion of No Confidence “against the government in which he serves.”

In announcing his resignation, Candor pointed to issues of good governance and constitutional integrity as the reasons for stepping down. “The recent developments pertaining to issues of Good Governance and Constitutional Integrity have brought me to the point where I feel constrained to tender my resignation as a Member of Cabinet, with immediate effect,” Condor said.

Condor and Harris were originally given an ultimatum by Douglas to either resign or be fired after they failed to support his two pieces of legislation. According to Condor, he feared that the pattern of poor governance in the Federation was getting worse.

“I remain committed to serve and to do the best that I can for the people of St. Christopher 3 and of the Nation in general, by the grace of God and by the will of the people.

“I pray that God would continue to bless and guide our Country, so that we would emerge from this unchartered path with a fresh vision for living as brethren; and working together in respectful harmony, for the good of all,” Condor said.

The Opposition has tabled a motion of no confidence in the government, but Douglas has so far refused to bring it before the full house of Parliament for debate.
