Blake left edges past Bolt to win the 100m at the Jamaican olympic trials.
Kingston, Jamaica (TDN) -- Just weeks before the London Olympics, Yohan Blake has stunned fellow Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt by beating him in both the 100m and 200m sprints at the Jamaican Olympic trials.
Bolt who is the world record holder in both the 100m and 200m with times of 9.58 and 19.09 respectively was outclassed by his training partner Blake who won with times of 9.75 and 19.26 seconds respectively.
In the 100 meters, Bolt made a time of 9.86 followed by Asafa Powell in a time of 9.88. Blake’s time of 9.75 was a personal best and also the fastest time so far in 2012. He has also run the fourth fastest time of all times.
Blake’s win will provide a fine set up for the London Olympics where the four men with the fastest times ever in the 100m will be competing: Usain Bolt (9.58), Tyson Gaye of the US (9.69), Usafa Powell (9.72) and Yohan Blake (9.75).
The bigger surprise came in the 200m where many believed that Bolt was invincible. Blake finished in 19.80 seconds to edge the world-record holder by 0.03. At the end of the race, Bolt appeared to be in some discomfort as Blake dropped to the ground in celebration.
More than 400 Jamaican athletes competed for some 60 places in the Olympics where Jamaica is expected to put on a formidable showing in the track and field athletics.
