Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Local press reports out of Dominica are indicating that retired public servant Eluid Williams is slated to be Dominica’s next president.
If confirmed, Williams will take over from ailing president Nicholas Liverpool who is expected to step down within the coming month.
Already, news of the appointment is meeting with resistance from some quarters when it was revealed that the Leader of the Opposition Hector John has not been consulted on the new appointment.
On Monday, John told a local radio station that he had not “heard anything as yet from the Prime Minister.” He said however that he was “willing to wait and see what happens.”
Section 19 (1) of the Dominican Constitution states “whenever the office of the President is vacant or the term of office of the President is due to expire within not more than ninety days, the Prime Minister shall consult with the Leader of the Opposition as to their joint nomination of a suitable candidate for election as President.”
Williams is a trained accountant who served as a permanent secretary between 1987 and 2004. From 2004 -2008 he served as Managing Director of the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) based in St Lucia.
In 2009 he was awarded Dominica’s second highest national award the Sisserou Award during the annual National Day parade.
