Dominican Students Excel at Monroe College Delia Shillingford
Five Dominican students graduated with Bachelors Degrees from Monroe College in New York over the weekend. Three of those students graduated with Honors Degrees, having achieved 4.0 GPAs. The students concerned were Hailsy Stoute, Gregory Scotland, and Samantha Alexander. Hailsy is from Petite Savanne and is a past employee of Q95FM Radio, having held the position of Administration Officer and Sales Traffic Manager.
Hailsy received her Bachelors Degree in Business Management with a Major in Hospitality Management. She was a member of the Munroe College Honors program and she received awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement, and Departmental Honors. She attributes her success to a large extent to the Monroe environment, and to the encouragement and motivation of family and past employer. According to her Monroe is more than just a college, it is a home away from home.
She states that the administration at Monroe understands the needs of foreign students and ensures that every student is given individual attention. No matter whether it pertains to financial or academic problems, students are guaranteed attention and a solution. Hailsy further states that the faculty, the dean of academics and the president of the New Rochelle Campus, are excellent at dealing with student issues and finding solutions.
Hailsy quotes the President of the college as stating that he finds Dominican students to be intelligent, and they usually bring new perspectives to the classroom. She advises that graduates of the Dominica State College to take advantage of the scholarships being awarded to students with high GPAs.
Monroe college has since awarded Hailsy a partial scholarship to pursue a masters in business management, which she expects to complete in August 2007. Her future plans include the establishment of a learning Institute in Dominica, which she hopes will be affiliated with Monroe College. She anticipates that students of the learning Institute will spend their first two years at the Dominica Campus and continue to completion at the New Rochelle Campus in the United States.
