Unions Prepare to Take Action by Thomson Fontaine
The Public Service Union has summoned a meeting with other trade unions in the country in an attempt to forge closer links amid moves by government to impose new austerity measures during the next budget set for June 16, 2003.
General Secretary of the PSU Thomas Letang said the support of the other unions are crucial as they all would be affected with the imposition of the ''harsh economic measures'' that are expected.
The other unions on the Island are the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU), the National Workers Union (NWU), the Dominica Trade Union (DTU), the Dominica Amalgamated Workers Union (DAWU), and the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT). In the past, the DTU and the DAT have been generally sympathetic to governments position.
Just this week, president of the Public Service Union Sonia Williams said her organization will file a lawsuit against the government of Dominica for the deduction of wages of public officers who went on strike in February. At the time, the workers were protesting governments intention to reduce the wages of public servants as part of its economic stabilization program.
