Windies Halts Aussies Winning Streak Thomson Fontaine
The West Indies claimed a stunning victory in the Fifth Cable and Wireless One-Day International by 39 runs in Port of Spain to once again lifted themselves after having surrendered the limited-over series. Australia still leads by 4 � 1.
This victory follows their denying Australia an historic clean sweep in the Test series by the their world record triumph in the final match in Antigua. The result halted the World Cup holders' winning streak at 21 matches. It was also the first win by the West Indies over the Australians in the shorter version of the game since the controversial final match of the corresponding series four years ago in Barbados.
Captain Brian Lara who was also named Man of the Match played a pivotal role in the win. Returning to number three in the batting order Brian Lara scored a typically fluent 80 and featured in a partnership of 178 with Wavell Hinds (79). The West Indies captain along with Hinds wrested the initiative from the Australians with thrilling strokeplay, establishing a new second wicket record for the West Indies against Australia in one day games in the Caribbean.
Given the West Indies now two historic wins over the Aussies the question remains whether the team is finally coming into its own and cricket lovers all over the Caribbean are asking if this is the remaking of the once mighty West Indies.
