Dominica's Silver Jubilee to be Celebrated in New York
Press Release

The Permanent Mission of the Commonwealth of Dominica to the United Nations and the Consulate General of Dominica in New York, in partnership with Dominica voluntary associations in the New York Metropolitan area, will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Dominica’s independence and membership in the United Nations with a cultural gala on November 8, 2003, and an inter-faith church service on November 9, 2003.

The cultural gala will take place at York College, City College of New York located at 94-45 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, Jamaica, Queens, NY. It will be an exposition of Dominica’s traditional dances-indigenous Carib, Belaire and Quadrille, folk music, and the popular contemporary music of Dominica, Cadence-Zouk.

The church service will be held at Hanson Place Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 88 Hanson Place, Brooklyn, NY 11217. The Reverend Alvin Benjamin, a Dominican religious minister, will read the sermon, and will be assisted by other Diaspora-based ministers.

Participating artists direct from Dominica include the indigenous Karifuna Cultural Group, the Roseau Cultural Group, calypsonian, De Hunter, and feature artist, the legendary Cadence-Zouk performer, Gordon Henderson, and his band, who will perform alongside Diaspora-based artists, dub-poet, Delmance Moses (a.k.a. Ras Mo) and past calypso monarchs of Dominica, Lord Tokyo, and Wizard.

Invitations to the cultural gala have been extended to all Permanent Missions to the United Nations, Consuls General, City and State officials, the corporate sector, and nonprofit organizations. The Dominica community in the New York metropolitan area is expected to attend this event in large numbers.

This cultural event will highlight the influences in Dominica’s culture: indigenous Carib, African, and European (both Anglophone and Francophone).
