There is the constant risk of flooding
Roseau, Dominica (TDN) - January in Dominica is supposed to signal the start of the dry (carême) season but so far this year it has been anything but dry. For the first 13 days of the year it has rained constantly with flood watches been issued for most of that time.

Today Saturday meteorologists are continuing to forecast more rain throughout the coming week and unsurprisingly the country remains under a flood watch throughout this weekend.

Traumatized by the passage of hurricane Maria some three months ago a large proportion of residents are still in temporary shelters or living under tarps as they seek to rebuild their homes and lives. And the constant rain is not making this task any easier.

With every passing shower the temporary tarpaulin covers are weighed down and the water inevitably makes it way inside. Beyond this immediate misery, water logged hillsides are prone to give way seriously increasing the risks of landslides in a country already devastated by hurricane Maria.

Worse swollen rivers constantly threaten to overflow their banks while testing the strength and durability of the large number of temporary bridges scattered across the island.

Indeed the weather pattern appears to be changing and not for the better.
