Mumbai, India (TDN)
It took four massive sixes by Carlos Braithwaite in the final over of the World Cup T-20 Finals to seal victory for the West Indies cricket team over England. In what was arguably the most exciting finals of the nine year event, West Indies entered the last over requiring 19 runs for victory.
Ben Stokes who was considered among the best death bowlers for England was handed the ball. In the penultimate over he had seen Chris Jordan bowl some magnificent Yorkers to restrict Marlon Samuels and Braithwaite to just seven.
What happened next was breathtaking in its execution. Four towering sixes from Braithwaite who kept his composure while remaining completely focused on the task ahead. In the end the Windies won with two balls to spare, writing their way into the history books by becoming the first team in world cricket to repeat as champions.
The competition started in 2007 with India winning the finals over Pakistan. In 2009 Pakistan won over Sri Lanka; in 2010 England won over Australia ; in 2012 Windies won over Sri Lanka; and in 2014 Sri Lanka won over India.
It was an unlikely journey for the 27 year old Braithwaite who was not initially included in the squad by the West Indian selectors. He only got a chance to play when veteran Keiron Pollard who was selected ruled himself out due to a recurring injury.
The win by the West Indies men’s team completes an exciting period for West Indian cricket, which has seen victories for the boys World Under 19 in the 50 overs, and the ladies senior team in the World-T20.
