Scores of LIAT flights remained grounded Wednesday.
Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Scores of LIAT flights grounded to a halt yesterday and today as LIAT pilots took strike action to protest the suspension of one of their pilots in Barbados.

Hundreds of passengers trying to leave Dominica on Tuesday were forced to return home after they were told that several LIAT flights had been suspended. The nightmare continued early Wednesday as additional flights were cancelled.

LIAT issued a public statement listing several flight cancellations and allowed passengers to rebook for up to one week later without stating any reason for the delays.

However, news reports out of Barbados revealed that the problem started when a pilot refused to fly his plane because he was not happy with the technical inspection and some discrepancies in the technical report.

That pilot was immediately suspended and when the head of the pilot’s union tried to intervene he too was suspended. At that point other pilots refused to take to the skies effectively grounding the entire fleet.

Early Wednesday morning, LIAT announced that the suspended pilots were reinstated but they expected the delays to continue for some time.

Meanwhile, scores of Dominican passengers trying to return to Europe, the United states and elsewhere remained grounded with many blaming LIAT for the delays and calling for increased competition within the Region.
