Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- In a move that has sent shock waves across the political landscape in Dominica, prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit have nominated House Speaker Alix Boyd Knights to be the country’s next president.

The controversial announcement have left many persons bewildered and concerned and there is now a growing chorus for public protest to deny the nomination.

For the past twelve years, Boyd-Knights have presided over an increasingly fractious parliament. She has been accused by many to be shamelessly partisan, consistently pandering to the needs of the ruling party while simultaneously frustrating the opposition.

No stranger to controversy the erstwhile Speaker has shamelessly spoken on the public political platform of the ruling Dominica Labour Party and has made no secret of her ambition to hold the highest office in the land.

Reviled by many in Dominica, particularly from her village of Trafalgar, Boyd-Knights has been the focus of public scorn for shutting down that village yearly feast claiming that she is unable to get her beauty sleep.

Beyond her awkward relationship with her fellow village people a wide cross section of the public seem to be choking on the thought that Boyd-Knights will within the next few months occupy the highest office in the land.

News of her pending appointment have left a number of unanswered questions chief being why the current president Eluid Williams is not being considered for the post. Mr. Williams was controversially appointed to serve out the final year of former president Nicolas Liverpool who retired for health reasons.

A woman caller to a local radio program echoing what appears to be the sentiment of the growing majority of Dominicans said “I am a woman and I can tell you that appointing Alix Boyd-Knights as president is the worse thing that can happen to Dominican women.”

Many other callers point to the fact that she is a polarizing figure in Dominica more likely to divide rather than unite an already fractious country. Still others lament the fact that she simply does not rise to the impeccable standing that such a position calls for.

Whatever the level of outrage, one thing is clear and that is Skerrit is in no mood to change his mind. Short of public protests to prevent the vote, Dominica appears set to be laden with the burden of a president that has precious little support within the country, and that will undoubtedly leave many asking the question, president who?
