Bridgetown, Barbados (TDN) -- On Tuesday evening, LIAT flight no 563 traveling from Dominica to Barbados with 18 passengers on board, developed a pressurization problem while en route.
According to a press statement from LIAT management, the flight landed safely in Barbados without incident. However, the authorities in Barbados deployed their emergency services to meet the aircraft.
According to LIAT, the captain assured the Barbadian authorities that no assistance was required and that it was not an “emergency situation” but “the Barbados Airport Authorities, in keeping with their procedures, had their emergency equipment on alert.”
“There was no smoke in the cabin as suggested in the media, however, after landing, when the air-conditioning system was activated in the normal manner, there was a vaporised mist from the air vents which is customary. The crew reported there were no reports of difficulty in breathing by the passengers. Following investigation and analysis by LIAT’s Maintenance and Engineering Department the aircraft was returned to service,” said the release.
This most recent incident follows one on the morning of Monday August 26, 2013 when LI 774 traveling from Guyana to Barbados, with 43 passengers on board, had a main wheel failure during takeoff.
According to LIAT, “the aircraft continued to the Grantley Adams International Airport where, as a precautionary measure, emergency services were on standby. The landing was uneventful and the passengers disembarked at the gate in Barbados.”
LIAT is in the middle of modernizing its ageing fleet and during the past few weeks have been plagued with numerous delays and cancellations as it struggles to meet the demands of the flying public.
