Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Clear Harbor a call center operator in Dominica has announced the laying off of some 243 of its 554 workers. The layoffs will take effect ion September 21, 2013. The company made the announcement at a press conference in Roseau on Wednesday August 21, 2013.

The company, which has been in operation sine 2010 said it recently lost a very large client and that it was in the process of replacing that client with several smaller clients. Clear Harbor said it was hopeful that it would be able to rehire the workers as its business improves.

News of the job loss comes at a time when the local economy is facing an uphill battle with several job losses over the past year. Last May the Rain Forest Aerial Tram laid off 66 of its workers after closing down following more than ten years of operation. That same month, KFC shuttered its doors in Portsmouth putting more than 50 workers on the breadline.

Dominica’s economy has been struggling to create new jobs and the jobless rate is estimated at close to 50 percent of the labor force with the majority of school graduates unable to secure meaningful employment.
