Pointe Mitchel, Dominica (TDN) -- Exactly one month to the day after a Dominican drug kingpin was arrested at Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom, Police there have made yet another arrest of a Dominican.
This time, it is Gholda James of Pointe Michel. The 18 year old former Dominica Next Top Model contestant was nabbed by London Police after she was discovered with two kilos of cocaine with a street value of 90 000 pounds (EC $ 300 000) in her luggage when she arrived from Dominica.
James is reported to have told the authorities that she was given a package by someone in Dominica to deliver in London and that she had no knowledge of what was inside.
In June, London Police arrested Curtis ‘Shakes” Richards on an arrest warrant from the French government who accused him of being a major cocaine and marijuana dealer in Guadeloupe.
At the time of his arrest, Police claimed that he had traveled to London to launder the drug money. He is currently awaiting trial in a Guadeloupe jail.
Under current sentencing laws in the United Kingdom, the recommended maximum sentence for importing 500 g to five kilos of a Class A drug to include cocaine and heroin is ten years’ imprisonment. When the quantity exceeds five kilos the penalty rises to 14 years.
