Batibou, Dominica (TDN) -- Dominica Police PRO John Carbon has confirmed the drowning deaths of two tourists and the sudden death of another just one week apart, and only two weeks after a visiting American college student was killed in a boating accident.
On December 13, 2012 , thirty-year old Russell Southgate of Calgary, Canada was snorkeling with his girlfriend and two other friends close to Batibou beach on the North Eastern coast when he encountered difficulties in the water.
By the time his friends reached him, he was unconscious. Southgate was taken to the Marigot Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Almost a week later, 68-year-old cruise ship passenger Jim Caves of Riverside, California died while snorkeling just outside of Soufriere on the South Western end of the island.
According to the Police, Caves had arrived in Dominica just hours earlier that Wednesday aboard Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas cruise ship. While snorkeling with his wife, daughter and other family members, Caves was observed to be in some distress in the water.
By the time the guide was alerted, he appeared to be losing consciousness and was rushed to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, Police have also confirmed that 55-year-old Thessen Jean Pierre a Belgian national died on a yacht at Sunset Bay Club in Coulibistrie on Thursday morning. The cause of death was not immediately known.
The deaths of the three visitors come just a couple of weeks after a visiting student from the University of Virginia, 22 year old Stacey Schulman died after she was hit by a boat’s propeller while snorkeling off the beach at Mero.
