Grand Turk, TCI (TDN) -- Former Turks and Caicos Premier Michael Misick wanted on an international arrest warrant has been arrested at the Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro by Brazilian Federal Police.

Misick served as the chief minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands from 15 August 2003 to 9 August 2006 and was its first Premier from 9 August 2006 to 23 March 2009.

He was forced out of office amidst allegations of corruption. In 2008, a Foreign Affairs Select Committee of British Parliament charged that Misick, "who is alleged to have built up a multi-million dollar fortune since he was elected in 2003 when he declared assets of only $50,000 (£25,000)," enriched himself and fellow ministers "by selling off Crown land to fund current investment.

A Commission of enquiry was set up and it later accused Misick of corruption and maladministration. In May 2012, an international warrant for his arrest was issued

Following Misick’s ouster from government in 2009, the United Kingdom instituted direct rule on the island until fresh elections were held in November 2012.

UK authorities are now seeking Misick’s extradition to the Turks and Caicos to face the corruption charges and have expressed their gratitude to the Brazilian authorities for the arrest.
