Bridgetown, Barbados (TDN) -- Police in Barbados say they arrested a man en route to Dominica with a firearm and ammunition concealed in his luggage.

Malachi Maliki Haile Mugabe, 35, who was carrying a St. Kitts-Nevis passport was apprehended at the Barbados’ Grantley Adams International Airport Sunday after arriving by air from Trinidad at about 11:20 am.

Customs officials scanned Mugabe’s luggage and discovered the gun and ammunition in a false bottom of his luggage.

Mugabe made his first appearance in court on Monday and was charged with: Illegal Possession of a firearm; Illegal Possession with 59 rounds of ammunition; Importation of a firearm without a valid license; and Importation of ammunition without a valid license.

He was remanded in jail until January 14, 2013 for a second court appearance.

It is believed that Mugabe may have obtained his St Kitts and Nevis passport under the country’s USD $250 000 per passport Economic Citizenship Program. This has not been confirmed by the Police and their investigations continue. Mugabe who lists his profession as a seaman did not reveal the reasons for his travel to Dominica.
