Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Members of the Dominica Coast Guard intercepted an open keel boat just a few miles off the island’s coast on Monday and arrested three Dominicans and a Columbian with a reported 70 kilos of cocaine valued at well over EC $2 million.

So far the names of those arrested have not been released but they remain in custody and could appear in court later this week.

Meanwhile, Police reported further success in their fight against drug trafficking when they intercepted a vehicle carrying some 7 kilos of cocaine in the Massacre area on Sunday. One man was arrested in connection with the drugs after Police disabled the vehicle by firing at its tires.

The latest arrests come just after two major cocaine busts within the space of four days in August 2012. AT that time, Police seized 40 kilos of cocaine at a residence in Hillsborough and arrested Harrison Warrington, Terrance Christopher and Brian Etienne for possession of the illegal substance.

Just a few days earlier the Dominica coast guard interdicted a small boat just outside of Roseau with more than 100 kilos of cocaine and arrested Cleve Gabriel and Jones St Jean in the process. The five men arrested have all been formerly charged and are awaiting their day in court.

In July 2012, five men were held and charged for importing and attempting to distribute 30 kilos of cocaine and in June 2011 Police captured four men wounding one in the process with 45 kilos of cocaine.

Police fear that Dominica is increasingly becoming a transshipment point for the dangerous illicit substance as traditional routes from Latin America to the United States and Europe come under increased pressure from US authorities. In the past two years several small boats from Dominica has been intercepted with drugs.

Last year, the US government donated two vessels to the Dominica Coast Guard to help fight the illicit trade as part of a security pact between the United States and Dominica governments.
