Caracas, Venezuela (TDN) -- 58 year old Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez told a stunned Nation tonight that his cancer has returned and that he will return to Cuba as soon as Sunday to undergo another surgery.

Speaking on National television, the man who won a third term as president just two months ago said that on his return to Cuba on November 27, 2012, tests showed a return of "some malignant cells" in the pelvic area where tumours were previously removed in June 2011 in Cuba.

After surgery in June 2011 he underwent chemotheraphy and radiation treatment and underwent a second round of surgery in February 2012.

During the lead up to the Venezuelan elections he assured the Venezuelan people that he was cancer free.

Sounding unusually somber, the president flanked by his Vice President Nicolas Maduro and other aides told the Venezuelan people for the first time that in the event of his health worsening, he would be succeeded by Maduro. "We should guarantee the advance of the Bolivarian Revolution," Chávez said.

Chavez returned to Caracas from Havana on Friday after spending ten days undergoing cancer treatment. It was during that time that doctors discovered the return of the malignant cancer cells. His decision to skip a summit of leaders in Brazil over the weekend led to widespread speculation that his health was ailing.

Chavez sounded upbeat saying that he expect to give the people of Venezuela good news on his return to Caracas. However, his candor and openness at tonight’s television appearance has led many to believe that his situation is serious and that his days might be numbered.
