George Town, Cayman Islands (TDN) -- Premier of the Cayman Islands McKeeva Bush has been removed from office in a no-confidence vote by lawmakers in the country's House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Government members joined with the opposition in voting 11 – 3 for Bush’s ouster. Bush abstained from the vote.

There had been repeated calls for Bush to step down following his arrest last week by Police on corruption charges. The no confidence motion was put forward by Opposition leader, Alden McLaughlin who admonished Bush for not stepping aside in light of the serious charges against him.

Following the vote, uncertainty remained as to whether the weakened governing party could form a new government or whether parliament would have to be dissolved to pave the way for early elections. A vote has been scheduled for May.

Political observers on the Island say that the Governor is not in favor of early elections and it now appears likely that a caretaker government will be put in place until elections are called.

Police say Bush is being investigated for suspected theft related to misuse of a government credit card and breach of trust, abuse of office and conflict of interest for the alleged importation of explosive substances without valid permits. No formal charges have been laid and he remains on Police bond until February 2013.

Bush has repeatedly described the Governor as his enemy and says he is behind the investigations as part of a “very vindictive” plot to destroy his reputation and political career.
