George Town, Cayman Islands (TDN) -- McKeeva Bush Premier of the Cayman Islands has been released on bail until February 2013 following a second day of questioning Police in that country.
Bush who was arrested on Tuesday, and then released only to be questioned for a second day was placed on bail as investigations into alleged corruption continues. No charges have been filed to date and government members cautioned patience as the probe continues.
However, there were growing voices within the opposition calling for Bush to step down in the interest of the country. Members of the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) urged Bush and his colleagues to follow “accepted international best practice”, noting that “the arrest of the premier is a hugely damaging body blow to the reputation of these Islands and to confidence in our government, It will do immense harm to our credibility as an international ?business centre,” the PPM statement read.
A major newspaper The Caymanian Compass in an editorial, also called for Bush to resign calling his arrest a national embarrassment. “Mr. Bush must not only step down as premier, he must also step down from his Cabinet position because he should not be in a position to dictate national policy for the country after his arrest,” the editorial read.
Police say they investigating Bush for breach of public trust, misappropriation of funds and other corruption related activities. However, Bush continues to maintain his innocence saying that he has done nothing wrong.
