Bridgetown, Barbados (TDN) -- Shane Shillingford, tore through a hapless Zimbabwe side snatching 6 for 49 in the second innings to reduce the visitors to 107 all out on the morning of the third day in the first test in Kensington, Barbados.
It was a brilliant display of spin bowling from the veteran cricketer. For the match Shilingford took 9 for107 becoming the West Indian bowler with the best average against Zimbabwe. The Dominican off spinner was making his return to international cricket after been inexplicably dropped from the West Indies tour to Bangladesh.
Last year, Shillingford took ten wickets against Australia in the final test in Roseau, Dominica then was left out of the West Indian squad for the first test against England. He was brought in for the second test taking just one wicket. After that game the selectors curiously dropped the off spinner.
Now back on the side, Shillingford almost single handedly demolished the hapless Zimbabwe side as they struggled to play his spin bowling on a pitch that never looked threatening.
Yesterday it was the turn of Captain Darren Sammy of St Lucia who led from the front with a stroke filled 73. His 100 run partnership with Danesh Ramdin (62) helped move the West Indies from a disastrous 151 for 6 to 307 all out.
Scores in the match, Zimbabwe 211 and 107; West Indies 307 and 12 for 1. West Indies now lead the two test series 1 – 0 after winning all of the one day internationals and the T-20 competitions.
The second test is scheduled for March 20 – 24 in Roseau, Dominica.
