Dominican Owned firm Wins Contract Related to the Building of the Martin Luther King Memorial
by: Thomson Fontaine
The firm of Real Estate Surveyors, LLC headed by Dominican Fitzroy Bertrand has been selected to do the topographical site survey of the Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Site on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The firm is also expected to participate in the actual construction of the project.

In 1996, the United States Congress authorized the construction of a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr., and in 1998 granted approval to build the memorial on the Mall of the Nation's Capital. On December 2, 1999, the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) approved the site location for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The King Memorial site is a four-acre plot across the tidal basin from the Jefferson Memorial and north of the memorial to President Roosevelt.

The approved site creates a visual "line of leadership" from the Lincoln Memorial, where King gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, to the Jefferson Memorial. Ground breaking for the memorial is expected later this year, with the estimated construction time of eighteen months, and at a projected cost of over $100 million dollars.

In giving the reasons for selecting Real Estate Surveyors LLC as the winning firm over all the other competition, the Executive Architect of the NCPC Ed Jackson remarked that the committee was impressed with the scope of the firm's past work and the level of competence and professionalism displayed by Mr. Bertrand during the interview.

Mr. Bertrand have expressed his delight at been selected for such a high profile project, and feels particularly honored that a Dominican will play a key role in the building of a memorial to one of the greatest men that ever lived.

Real Estate Surveyors is headquartered in Maryland, USA and specializes in residential and commercial mortgage; boundary and topographic survey; subdivision of land; construction stakeout; and site planning.

President of the company Fitzroy Bertrand was born in Dominica where he attended high school before obtaining a Bachelors degree in Business Administration, and a Masters degree in Real estate from John Hopkins University.
