Dominica-Cuba Relationship Deepens Sean Douglas
The excellent bilateral relationship that currently exists between the Commonwealth of Dominica and the Republic of Cuba has deepened with the opening of the newly refurbished Nursing School and Nurses hostel yesterday.
Not even intermittent rain was able to dampen the excitement and satisfaction of officials from both Dominica and Cuba for this historic occasion.
Under the Cuban Technical Assistance Programme, the Cuban Government has so far contributed materials in the amount of over $500,000 while the Government of Dominica has contributed labour in the amount of $400,000 towards the refurbishment of the old Nursing School and Nurses hostel, now to be referred to as the Faculty of Health Sciences, Goodwill Campus.
The refurbished building now consists of two (2) clinical labs, one (1) computer lab, four (4) classrooms, offices for tutors and the Dominica Nursing Council and a thirty-seven (37) room hostel with kitchen and common room.
Under the Programme, the Cuban Government is providing seventeen (17) nursing tutors over the next two and a half years.
Also present at the opening ceremony were President of Dominica, His Excellency, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, DAH, Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister for Health and Social Security, Hon. John Fabien, Minister for Education, Hon. Vince Henderson, other members of Cabinet, Cuban Ambassador to Dominica, His Excellency, Mr. Osvaldo Cobacho, other members of the diplomatic corps, Cuban medical officials, officials from the Ministries of Health and Education in Dominica, the media among many others.
