Pursue Claim to Bird Island
In response to your article on Bird Island(See Story). Should Dominica actively get involved in staking a sovereign claim or should we relinquish our rights to such a claim?
I feel within my heart that it is our God given right to pursue this claim to the end. Bird Island is within our coastal territorial boundaries according to the United Nations Maritime regulations. Lets keep in mind that Venezuela has no legal right to continue its aggressive claim to Bird Island and does so only because we have not bothered to confront them.
Bird Island could be a strategic part of our future natural resources plans, which in turn could benefit the Island immensely. Venezuela is aware of these natural resources and has staked their own claim to the rights of the Island. I am not sure what their legal provisions are towards that claim.
It would be prudent of us at this time to follow up through the United Nations any investigations into the sovereignty of Bird Island. If it belongs to Dominica legally then it is our right to ensure it remains within our boundaries.
