Scholarship for Marine Research

INTERNATIONAL OCEAN INSTITUTE Announces the DANIELLE DE ST. JORRE SCHOLARSHIP.

Call for Applications for 2010 Since 2000 the International Ocean Institute presents a Scholarship of Swiss Francs 10,000 annually for one woman from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) involved in marine related research activities to improve their knowledge in the subject of attending training or University Degree programmes.

The scholarship has been established to honour the memory of the late
Danielle de St. Jorre, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Environment and
Tourism of the Republic of the Seychelles and a member of the Governing
Board of the International Ocean Institute, in consideration of all she
did in her short life for the benefit of her country, the small island
developing states and the world at large.

The International Ocean Institute hereby invites applications and
nominations for the 2010 scholarship.

You may wish to use the Scholarship for attending the eight- week Ocean Governance: Policy, Law and Management (Canada, 19th May - 16th July 2010 -
http://internationaloceaninstitute.dal.ca/training.html/), or the five-
week Training Programme on Regional Ocean Governance for Mediterranean
and Eastern European Countries at the University of Malta
(November-December 2010 - www.capemalta.net/ioimoc).

Further information on the Scholarship is available in the attached
document as well as guidelines for interested applicants.

The application must include a CV and a statement giving the reason for the
application or nomination, including how the applicant or nominee
intends to use the scholarship if awarded.

Ceremony to mark official commencement of Petite Soufriere-Rosalie road - November 18

A ceremony to signify the official commencement of work on the Petite Soufriere-Rosalie Link Road is carded for Wednesday, November 18th 2009 in the afternoon at Petite Soufriere. The length of the road is 2.6 miles or 4km.

The President of Dominica, Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit and other Members of Cabinet and officials from PetroCaribe are among those expected to attend this major event.

Passing of Jefferson Samuel Hill (Cherie) of Toronto‏

The Commonwealth of Dominica, Ontario Association regrets to announce the passing of Jefferson Samuel Hill more commonly known as Cherie or Jeff. Jefferson (Cherie) passed away on Friday Oct. 30, 2009 at Scarborough General Hospital. He was the brother of Richard Hill in Brampton, Rowland Hill in Scarborough, Bill Hill in Dominica, and Hyacinth Lloyd in Jamaica. In addition to his brothers and sister, He leaves behind his son Bryan Hill of USA, his daughter Solange Destouch of USA, as well as his life partner of 35 years Celia Vidal.

CDOA Scholarship Program Call for Applicants

COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA, ONTARIO ASSOCIATION (CDOA)
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Sponsored by
Western Union Financial Services

Purpose:
o To encourage and assist youth from the Commonwealth of Dominica, Ontario Community who are resident in areas served by the CDOA to pursue their educational goals at the University or College level.

o To recognize academic efforts, community involvement and contribution in the Dominican community in Ontario.

Number and Value of Awards:
The minimum value of each scholarship to be awarded annually is Cdn $500.00. The scholarships are non-renewable and non-transferable. The scholarships are to be used towards full course of study, leading to a first Diploma or first Degree.

Where tenable:
These awards are tenable at any accredited university, community college or trade school in Canada.

Eligibility:
To be eligible the applicant must meet the following criteria:

a) Individuals who are not older than 24 years of age and whose parents, guardians or grandparents are of The Commonwealth of Dominica descent; or any Financial/Honorary Life member of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Ontario Association and who is in good financial standing.

b) A first year or continuing student enrolled at or currently attending a university, college or trade school;

c) Submit proof of enrollment to the qualifying university or college or trade school. Proof of registration must be mailed or faxed to the CDOA by the Registrar.

d) Student must be actively involved in the community or engaged in extra-curricular activities

Scholarship Committee
A Five (5) person Committee consisting two CDOA Past Presidents, two members of the current CDOA Executive and one financial member from the community will be responsible for administering the Scholarship on behalf of the Association. The Committee will select recipients and their decision shall be final.

EVALUATION WILL BE BASED UPON:

- A copy of Academic transcript.
- Two letters of reference, one from an academic institution attended within the last two years of the year of application; and the other from a community member other than a parent outlining:
a) How the referee came to know you.
b) How long the referee has known you.
c) Why the referee thinks applicant is deserving of award

- An essay of approximately 250 words outlining (in the student’s own words) indicating why applicant should be selected.

- The applicant must also outline academic achievements and any volunteer activities and leadership roles they have assumed.

- The applicant should also include any economic factors relevant to the application.

Requirement of the Recipient(s)

- The Recipient(s) should be available to participate in future award ceremonies and be willing to serve as role models in the CDOA Community.

Terms of Payment

The first installment of 50% of the value of the scholarship will be issued to the recipient upon receipt of proof of enrollment for the school year. The second installment will be issued after completion of the same school year.

Passing of Hermia Alleyne & Dr. Desmond McIntyre‏ of Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica, Ontario Association regrets to advise on the passing of two Dominicans:

Hermia Alleyne who was 89 years old. Mother of Hugo, Brian, Candia, Ian, Kenny & Peter.

Dr. Desmond McIntyre, the 83 year old surgeon whose impact on Dominica's health care system spanned over 50 years died peacefully on September 27th. He leaves to mourn his wife, Myrtle and his five children (Lester, Christine, Debbie, Gillie and Roger), grand children, 7 surviving siblings.

Funeral services for Hermia Alleyne and Dr. Desmond McIntyre will take place in Dominica. The CDOA extends our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased and wish safe travels to family leaving for Dominica to attend the funerals.

Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program deadline approaches

The Government of Canada is seeking applications from Canadian publicly funded institutions for the Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program.

This program provides citizens of the following countries with research or study scholarships for four to eight months: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitt's, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos.

Applying for A Dominica Passport

Effective January 1st 2008, all passports are been issued at the Immigration Department, Police Headquarters, in Roseau, Dominica. The new passport is a Machine Readable CARICOM passport that conforms to international standards. The regular colour is Blue and it will replace those currently in circulation.

Your best option is to have the Dominica Consulate, New York Office, assist you with the processing of your new CARICOM passport. Applications for new passports are sent to Dominica on a weekly basis and the return courier fee of US $50.00 is the responsibility of the applicant. That amount can be paid in cash to the Dominica Consulate or by postal money order made out to the Dominica Mission to the UN.

An interview is required for ANY first time applicant or for ANY applicant replacing the old British passport.

Renewal of an Expired Passport

Call the Consulate General at 212-599 8478 to request the passport form or
Download at Passport Form (Courtesy thedominican.net)

Once you have obtained the form, Complete the Passport Application Form. Please pay special attention to bullet point F and 9 on the form. (Ensure that section 8 is notarized and section 9 is recommended and dated clearly.)

These are the items that must be submitted with the completed Passport Application Form:

1. Old Passport
2. Two (2) Passport-sized photographs. One must be endorsed by the recommender. (Ensure that your shoulders are covered and that your facial expression does not show your teeth.)
3. Application fee of EC$100.00/US$40.00 payable to: Dominica Consulate
4. Original Birth Certificate and a copy (your original will be returned with your new passport)
• Return courier fee of US $50.00 payable to: Dominica Mission to the UN
5. Letter of Authorization (This letter has to be notarized).

Replacement of Lost or Damaged Passport

1. Make a Police report to Police Headquarters, Immigration Department in Roseau by calling 1-767-448-2222. THIS MUST BE DONE.

2. Call the Consulate General at 212-599-8478 and request a Lost Passport Application Form. In addition to the passport form, a Statutory Declaration Form will be attached. This also had to be filled out and notarized.

If you are making personal arrangements to replace your lost passport, please note that: Someone must collect a Report from the Police Headquarters to take to the Treasury along with US$192.31 (EC$500.00) Penalty fee and Passport fee of US$40.00 (EC$100.00).

These are the items that must be submitted with the completed Passport Application Form and notorized Statutory Declaration Form:

(a) Receipts from the Treasury
(b) Completed Passport Application Form (section 8 notarized and section 9 recommended)
(c) Original Birth Certificate (copies are not acceptable)
(d) Two (2) Passport-sized photographs. One MUST be endorsed by the recommender. (Ensure that your shoulders are covered and that your facial expression does not show your teeth.)
(e) Completed Statutory Declaration (This form MUST be Notarized)
(f) Original Birth Certificate and a copy (your original will be returned with your new passport) or Notarized copies of supporting documents must be submitted. E.g. Marriage Certificate, Deed Poll
(g) Letter of Authorization (This letter MUST be notarized)

PLEASE NOTE ALSO:

Section 8 on the passport application must be signed in the presence of a Notary Public and the Seal of the notary public must be affixed as closely as possible.

Section 9 on the passport application may be a non national, who must clearly indicate his/her profession and how long he/she knows the applicant. He/she must also attach his/her office stamp.
