Roseau, Dominica (TDN) Several thousand supporters of Team Dominica United Workers Party (UWP) gathered at the Newtown Savannah for a massive rally dubbed ‘Victory for Change’.

The rally signaled the official launch of the party’s election campaign and comes just a few days after the announcement by prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit that elections will take place in Dominica on December 8, 2014.

Excited supporters heard from all twenty-one candidates of the party including political leader Lennox Linton who vowed that his party would sweep the upcoming polls.

Linton also ridiculed the Dominica Labour Party’s (DLP) campaign, which has so far focused on the erecting of massive bill boards across the island costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. He questioned how a government which claim not to have money to pay workers and to meet basic spending needs suddenly hand millions of dollars “for wasteful political spending.”

The UWP leader also chastised Skerrit for the hiring of foreign artists and stage equipment to the exclusion of local talent. He wondered how Skerrit could justify the paying of tens of thousands of dollars to foreign artists while neglecting the talented local groups.

Linton also used the opportunity to comment on a poll conducted by the Skerrit camp which showed a decline of 19 percent in popular support for the incumbent party. He reasoned that this was a sure sign that the party was headed for defeat and that the people of Dominica were in fact ready for change and a new government would be in place when the elections were called.
