Dominican athletes make it through to finals of 2014 Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, Scotland (TDN) [Update] Dominican athletes continue to perform creditably at the 2014 Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow, Scotland with two athletes making it through to the finals of their respective disciplines. University of Maryland junior Thea LaFond advanced to the Women’s Triple Jump Final with a season best of 13.15 meters and Dillon Simon of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore going through to the finals in the shot put.

In the women’s triple jump finals at Scotland’s National Stadium on Tuesday La Fond placed 11 with a jump of 12.64. Her semifinal jump of 13.15 meters was a season’s best for the Dominican athlete.

LaFond is also through to the 12 woman High Jump event taking place on Friday night. She qualified with a height of 1.81 meters. The highest ranked qualifier was Leontia Kallenou of Cyprus with a clearance of 1.85 meters.

Also on Tuesday, Dillon Simon competing in the finals of the shot put with a talented field of athletes placed seventh with a throw of 18.66 meters. The gold medal went to Dwayne Richards of Jamaica with a throw of 21.61 meters.

Meanwhile, female boxer Valerian Spicer comprehensively defeated favorite Alexis Pritchard of New Zealand in the women’s Round of 16 lightweight category of 57 to 60 kg for a place in the semifinal round beginning on Friday night.

The 20th staging of the Commonwealth games comprises athletes from 71 different nations and territories making up the Commonwealth nations, or current and former British colonies. At the end of Day Six Australia leads the medal count with 101 comprising 34 gold, 31 silver and 36 bronze.

The highest ranked Caribbean country is Jamaica at number 8 with 12 medals; 5 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze. Bahamas, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada all have one medal each.
