Hollywood, USA (TDN) --- Treva Etienne the successful British born actor of Dominican parents is calling for increasing opportunities for aspiring black and mixed-race British actors in Hollywood. The actor who starred in Black Hawk Down and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, have also won a lead role in Steven Spielberg's television sci-fi series Falling Skies.

Etienne is the latest in the line of black British actors following Idris Elba in The Wire, David Oyelowo in The Butler, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Without a Trace, David Harewood in Homeland, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film 12 Years a Slave, who have found success across the Atlantic in Hollywood.

The talented actor believes that more British actors should be given opportunities as teenagers to allow them to hone their craft . "We will be destroying a generation of actors if we give these opportunities just to one kind of kid at Eton and not to others," he said. "And these two kinds of kids are going to meet each other in later life and they are going to see the difference. Acting should not just work for one class of kids. It should work for all kids." Etienne made his statements to the British newspaper the Observer over the weekend.

Etienne credits his parents who came from Delices, Dominica during the first migration wave from that country in the late 1950s for his success. He told the Observer that he comes from a large family where his parents always stressed the importance of education although from a very early age he was drawn to the arts.

In addition to criticizing the lack of opportunity for black youths, Etienne urged British TV producers to take more risks arguing that "there should be more diversity to the projects – not just the same tried and tested, familiar things. Otherwise we will get an even greater domination of American television drama."
