Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- A nine man jury in Dominica’s High Court has found Edward ‘Alcapone’ Green guilty in the brutal slaying of 35 year old Damian Dorival in August 2008. The jury deliberated for three hours before returning the guilty verdict.

During the past several weeks, the court heard how Green was linked to the slaying. The prosecution told the court that Green fatally shot Dorival in the head before severing his head from the rest of the body.

Just hours after the killing, the headless body of Dorival was discovered close to the Elmshall road and his head was later recovered from the river.

Green was familiar with Dorival since the latter rented one of his dwellings. Police believe that Green may have murdered Dorival because he was owed unpaid rent. They linked Green to the murder after Dorival’s blood was discovered in a car belonging to him.

He later told the court that he had no knowledge of the crime and that someone else took his gun and shot Dorival.

The most powerful witness for the prosecution turned out to be Green’s son David ‘Pino’ Green who testified that he helped his father to dispose of the body. Police also placed him in protective custody during the course of the trial.

The trial which lasted just about a month drew a lot of public interest with many describing the act as the most vicious murder in Dominica’s history. However, counsel for the defense Peter Alleyne said the case was sensationalized and that the crime for which his client was found guilty could not be compared with the 1963 carnival day fire, which left three people dead.

Trinidadian attorney Keith Scotland prosecuted the case on behalf of the state after acting Director of Public Prosecutions Julian Prevost recluse himself having previously represented Green.

It took just about four years for the case to come to trial during which time Green remained in custody. Green is the son of former Morne Daniel estate owner Daniel Green.

He will be sentenced on September 6, 2013. The prosecution has already said that they will not press for the death penalty.
