Washington, DC (TDN) -- Rosalie Bay Resort in Dominica is one of eleven finalists in the United States Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence for 2012. Established in 1999, the award recognizes the important role that U.S. businesses play abroad as good corporate citizens in advancing corporate social responsibility.

Nominations for the prestigious award were made by U.S. Ambassadors from across the globe, and in the end eleven finalists were selected.

The resort, situated on the South East Coast of Dominica was nominated for its support of the country’s efforts at promoting eco tourism through sustainable development.

Specifically, Rosalie bay Resort is at the forefront of protecting endangered sea turtles by providing a safe nesting environment. In 2003, when the Resort began its protection efforts, there were just seven leatherback nests. This number had increased dramatically to 69 nests by 2010 with three species of sea turtles – leatherback, hawksbill and green.

In addition, the Resort is known for sourcing locally produced goods and uses solar and wind power generation. It also contributes to local literacy programs.

Rosalie Bay Resort was founded in 2003 by Minnesota native Beverly Deikel, and was recently honored by Travel + Leisure as a 2012 Global Vision Award Winner for Conservation.

In June 2012, the Resort was awarded Green Globe Certification, which is the worldwide sustainability system based on internationally accepted criteria for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses. Also, in May 2012 it received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award.

In responding to news of the nomination owner of Rosalie Bay Resort Beverly Deikel noted “more than ten years ago, we embarked on a journey to create a boutique resort that would protect the environment and its resources, empower the local residents with job training and opportunities, and share the beauty of the Nature Island with travelers.”

“It is an incredible honor to be named among such an elite group of socially responsible businesses worldwide and to be recognized by the U.S. Secretary of State,” Deikel added.

In addition to the various awards, the Resort has gained an international reputation for excellence and boasts among its more famous guests president of Virgin Atlantic Richard Branson who spent time there in 2011.

The winners of the 2012 Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence will be announced by Secretary Hilary Clinton at a ceremony in Washington, DC in December this year.
