Police in Dominica continue their search for a convicted murderer who made his third escape from the Stock Farm prison earlier this week.

Thirty-six-year-old Steven Alphonse of Belles, made good his escape while on work detail with other prison inmates sometime in the afternoon of Wednesday January 27.

Steven Aphonse is still at large three days after his prison break.

He apparently walked away from the group of men who were engaged in extracting coal from a pit and was not discovered until a head count was conducted when a shift change of guards was being made.

The brazen escape have left many in Dominica wondering about the security of the inmates at the prison and prompted police inspector Claude Weeks to question the actions of the prison officials.

Prison breaks are not uncommon, but the escapees are usually caught within a few days.

Alphonse was convicted in 1993 in the brutal slaying of a young woman and was initially sentenced to death. He however successfully appealed his death sentence and it was commuted to 40 years behind bars.

According to Inspector Weekes, besides posing a threat to others, Alphonse has also placed himself in danger. “Is the family going to have faith in the prison system? It makes no sense for him to be a fugitive from his country. By remaining outside he makes himself open to reprisal and retribution.”

Police fear that Alphonse may have already fled the country. In one of his previous escapes he made his way to Guadeloupe where he remained for some time before being captured by Guadeloupian police and deported to Dominica.

Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of the escaped prisoner should contact the nearest police station or call 266-5164, 266-5165, 266-5185, 266-5117 or 266-5119.
